A wealthy trading partner of the ancient Egyptians, Punt was known for exotic products such as myrrh, frankincense, and leopard skins. Despite its importance, the Egyptians never revealed its exact location. Recent research suggests that ancient Punt may have been Adulis, part of the Aksumite Empire.

The conclusion is based on genetic analysis of a baboon mummified in the late period of Ancient Egypt (around 800 and 500 BC). Genetics indicate that the animal arose near where Adulis is known to have appeared centuries later.

Although some archaeologists are cautious about pairing Adulis with Punt, this bold hypothesis opens new avenues of research that could reveal how trade affected Egypt’s maritime technology and the diversity of wildlife in the region.
