The partnership is focused on creating battery systems using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells that provide greater safety and longer range than previous EV batteries.

Although the project was canceled in February, the collaboration with BYD laid an important foundation for modern battery technology: BYD’s latest battery was developed with the lessons learned from this secret partnership.

Apple engineers contributed to battery pack design and thermal management, while BYD provided the manufacturing processes. However, Apple does not have the rights to BYD’s existing battery technology.
