Surprisingly, the researchers found that certain pairs of biomarkers, such as oxygen and methane, ozone and methane, were more prominent 100-300 million years ago. This period coincides with the flowering of plants, which causes the oxygen level in the Earth’s atmosphere to increase.

Based on light signatures from this period, the study suggests that any extraterrestrial telescope observing Earth would have a better chance of finding signs of life during the Jurassic period than today.

The findings also offer astronomers new opportunities to search for habitable planets.
