This iteration, called Office 2024, is currently in development and is expected to launch in the third or fourth quarter of the year.
The move follows Microsoft’s increased emphasis on its Microsoft 365 cloud service, which offers access to the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other office applications for a monthly or annual fee.
However, the company acknowledged that there remains demand for standalone versions of Office, especially among users who prefer one-time purchases rather than ongoing subscription payments.
Some had predicted that Office 2021 would be the last version of the product with a perpetual license, but the company’s plans clearly indicate otherwise. The existence of Office 2024 was first discovered in the internal preview build of Microsoft Office via the Click-to-Run (C2R) API.
