Finnish media report on the authorities’ plans to close the checkpoint on the border with Russia on November 16. The reason for this decision, according to the media, is the increase in the flow of refugees from Syria, Somalia and other countries.

Finland could close checkpoint on border with Russia on November 16: media

According to Helsingin Sanomat sources, the Finnish authorities are taking note of the deteriorating situation at the border and intend to impose stricter restrictions. According to Ilta-Sanomat, the decision has already been made.

Earlier this month, the Finnish Ministry of the Interior announced that the department was developing a bill under which the checkpoint on the border between Finland and Russia would be closed.

“The Ministry of the Interior is preparing a proposal according to which border posts will be closed or their work will be limited. Current legislation allows it,” Forbes quoted the then Minister of the Interior.

According to Finnish media, on November 15 the head of the Ministry of the Interior was going to hold a press conference to announce the restrictions that were being introduced.

However, according to Helsingin Sanomat sources, the event was canceled due to the worsening situation at the border. As a result, it was decided to take even stricter measures.

It has not yet been specified which of the nine checkpoints on the border between the two countries will be closed.

In early November, the country already took measures regarding the flow of illegal immigrants. Finland has banned the entry of bicycles into its territory from Russia. Restrictions apply at three checkpoints.

In mid-September, Finland, following the Baltic countries, banned cars with Russian license plates from entering its territory. It later emerged that Helsinki would consider banning Russians from real estate transactions.
