Apple said it will add support for the new RCS standard to iOS next year, which replaces SMS and MMS.
With RCS, iPhone and Android users can message each other, create shared chats, and send location and uncompressed photos and videos. RCS also provides support, reading and typing records.
One of the main advantages of RCS is that this protocol can work over the Internet without a cellular signal.
Late next year we will add support for RCS, a standard currently published by the GSM Association. We see that RCS provides better compatibility compared to SMS or MMS. It will work with iMessage, which is still the best and most secure messaging option for Apple users.

Apple ignored RCS for a long time, but has probably decided to add it under the control of regulators Google and Samsung.
In Russia, RCS works in some cities on Samsung smartphones with an MTS SIM card. [9to5Mac]
