IBM will reject advertising on Elon Musk’s social network X (formerly Twitter), writes The Washington Post. The company believes that the platform does not support content moderation.

IBM will stop advertising on X

IBM said its ads ran alongside posts of a “pro-Nazi nature.” The company indicated that it “does not tolerate incitement to hatred and discrimination” and added that it was investigating the “completely unacceptable” situation.

The newspaper cites data from the non-profit organization Media Matters for America, according to which advertising materials from IBM were placed next to the messages, including those praising the ideas of Adolf Hitler.

According to NPO president Angelo Carusone, IBM spent a lot of money advertising on the site and the company had never stopped advertising on it before. Furthermore, IBM has not previously expressed any complaints about Elon Musk’s policies.

According to a representative of the NGO, the social network today cannot moderate the content it publishes.

The newspaper sees IBM’s decision as a blow to the policy of X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who, according to The Washington Post, seeks to get advertisers back to the site.

Following Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in October 2022, the social network faced an exit of advertisers. After about six months, the businessman decided to hand over the CEO position to Yaccarino, who previously headed NBCUniversal’s advertising department.

According to The Washington Post, the massive layoffs that Musk initiated at the company last fall included, in particular, the content moderation department.
