Italy has legally banned the production and sale of artificial meat. Violators of the law will be fined up to 150 thousand euros. One of the most important agricultural associations was in favor of the ban, while eco-opponents were opposed.
The Italian parliament passed a law banning the production and sale of laboratory-produced meat in the country. Reuters writes about this.
Italy’s Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida said the country has become the first in the world to ban artificial meat. Violators of the law will be fined between 15 and 150 thousand euros.
One of the driving forces behind the ban was the main Italian agricultural association Coldiretti, whose petition gathered around 500,000 signatures and also received support from local authorities in Italy.
Environmentalists opposed the law, arguing that it was putting pressure on the interests of agricultural producers and breeders. Additionally, critics of the law pointed to the potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions if animal husbandry were reduced.
