Punters may face new requirements regarding the payment of fees to computer game developers. This proposal is being discussed within the group “Development of High-Tech Sports in the Russian Federation”. It is proposed to create a special account for contributions to the Unified Regulator of Gambling (URAI) with possible redistribution of funds in case copyright holders do not request it within a certain period of time.
Bettors are already contributing to support sports through ERAI, but so far no rewards have been provided to copyright holders of computer games. This change may affect the bookmaker industry, which actively develops betting on eSports, including the budget of the Computer Sports Federation (FCS) and other associations.
Although eSports betting is not yet as big as traditional sports, its popularity among young people is increasing. This sector stands out with its enormous potential and rapid development despite financial difficulties.
This model is reminiscent of the mechanism previously introduced by Presidential decree, which allowed the money to be transferred to a special account if the copyright owner did not accept it. Although this issue has been discussed before, it is important to note that the proposed model does not provide for the redistribution of funds for the development of industries.
