Apple Arcade released the successful roguelike game Downwell. I recommend it, it’s addictive

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long time since I last looked at Apple Arcade. The service is slowly filling up with good games, but most of them are not engaging – a problem that the company has been struggling with for three years now. There aren’t enough cool projects there.

It’s not for nothing that the biggest tool in arcades is not really exclusive things, but versions of previously existing titles for mobile phones, just now without in-game purchases and advertising.

Downwell – this is exactly the situation. This game is from a legendary, respected indie publisher Devolver Digital was released back in 2015 for PC (125 rubles), then Nintendo Switch, Android, PlayStation 4, iOS (249 rubles) and even managed to appear on the dying PlayStation Vita.

Apple Arcade now has its own version of Downwell: Downwell+. This is a complete copy of a paid game for iOS, differing only in one fact: for subscribers of the service it free.

I haven’t been this stuck in a long time.

You are falling into me. The further you fall, the better. The fall is stopped by the platform and enemies. Some you can jump on. Others will have to be avoided. Everything else can and should be destroyed. And the platform is also being destroyed.

The character shoots from his feet. Yes, he has gun boots. By default they shoot straight down.

The game has levels, but their passage is bypassed. The gameplay is based on the classic “roguelite” genre, they are also called “roguelite”. Every game cycle ends sooner or later. For savings currency You buy upgrades, you know how to fly deeper, earn more money, discover new things. And so on ad infinitum.

Retro pixel graphics can now look forced, and static screenshots can look downright miserable. But in 2015, this was not yet a shameful trend, and today not everyone will be turned off. The palette is as simple as possible: black, white and red. The developers did a great job with these three colors, at the same time giving them success in styles.

Downwell comes in a vertical orientation, which is a plus; it loads instantly. Internet is not required. Opens at appropriate intervals throughout the day when you are waiting for something. Review the current moment, merge, upgrade, then continue. In short, an excellent time killer.

The fact that the toy came out 8 years ago does not affect its quality today. So if you pay for Arcade (and have already forgotten about it, like me) – I advise you to look and put it down, it is unlikely that you will receive a reward. It went really well over the weekend, and today I played on the subway for almost an hour, I almost missed the station.
