Following the unexpected departure and subsequent negotiations for a return, OpenAI’s board of directors decided to appoint a new interim CEO, Emmett Shear, former president and co-founder of Twitch.
The decision came after four board members refused to resign and allow Altman to return.
According to sources close to the company, the leadership change was seen as “the only way” to achieve the company’s mission of creating “broadly useful” artificial general intelligence.
Shear’s appointment came as a surprise, given his lack of experience in the field of artificial intelligence. He left Twitch in early March ahead of significant staff cuts. Amazon bought the live streaming service for $1 billion in 2014.
