More than 730 OpenAI employees signed an open letter threatening to leave the company unless the board resigns and brings back CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman.
This comes after Altman was fired by the board on Friday.
Following backlash from investors, including Microsoft, OpenAI’s board appeared ready to bring Altman back to the company. However, the board later told staff that Altman would not return.
Following this, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Altman and Brockman would join the tech giant to lead a new cutting-edge AI research department.
Nadella also offered positions in the new Microsoft division to any OpenAI employees who wanted to transfer.
Thus, the Redmond company can acquire OpenAI without spending a dime on the acquisition if the majority of the company’s employees decide to move to the new Microsoft division.
