I’ll ruin everything for you now. Do you have a MacBook? This means your Caps Lock on your keyboard is laggy.
Don’t believe me? Check it out. Hit it now. Didn’t catch fire. Now live with it.
But Why Is this what happens? Caps Lock has been slowing down on all existing MacBooks for at least 20 years, and nothing has changed. It can’t be that this is a banal bug that has survived so many reincarnations of macOS and Apple’s own laptops.
The answer is actually reasons. But it can be treated.
Why Caps Lock is slow on Apple computers
No one knows. And who knows, he still hasn’t told.
I’m serious. There is not one documented confirmed The reason why Caps Lock keys take a while to activate on any Mac. There is also no clearly defined moment when this keyboard behavior became the norm for Apple desktop employees.
This common theory sounds quite logical, it sounds like this. The delay was added a long time ago with extremely good intentions: to reduce the number of accidental button presses, leading to an unwanted change in the printing mode from uppercase to uppercase or vice versa.
The usage theory states that pressing the Caps Lock key lasts slightly longer than just a momentary “press” always done correctly.
Against the theory, I note that it is very difficult to miss Caps Lock. At least in more than 10 years of touch typing, I have not encountered such a problem in any OS. But maybe I just didn’t notice it – precisely because of the delay, after previewing what someone else had added to macOS.
By the way, Ubuntu OS also supports Caps Lock support by default. Some Windows laptops also experience performance lag. But this is a different case – it is due only to the fact that the manufacturer provides pre-installed software that intercepts the signal and displays the register change on the screen. This is done due to the inclusion of an LED indicator in the caps button.
How to disable delay, activate Caps Lock in macOS
1. The easiest way: System Preferences → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit. Next, turn on and then turn off the toggle switch “Use Caps Lock support to toggle…”.
For some reason, after this, the “lag” disappears until the system is rebooted, although theoretically it should not. This is a real bug, unlike the default behavior of Caps Lock. But we won’t complain about him.
2. Here is another way to get through it, but it entails other consequences. Go to System Preferences → Accessibility → Keyboard and toggle switch Slow keys. Then click the button I opposite it and move the slider Delay before key activation left all the way.
The delay in activating Caps Lock will disappear, but other problems will appear. The movement of oxygen in the text along the arrows slows down greatly, and if you type very, very quickly, the system will begin to skip some of the input keys.
3. Finally, you can download the open source program Karabiner Elements. Hey, it’s been ten years already. There, in addition to fine-tuning the keyboard, you can remove the delay in pressing Caps Lock.
PS I would be happy to discover the root cause and timing of this delay in macOS, but several days of searching the Internet did not yield an answer. If you have an answer and proof, write in the comments – we will all be grateful.
