Microsoft is working on the Edge Secure Network feature, which can be understood as a built-in VPN for the browser, just like Opera. This emerged from a guide published last week before the functionality became available. Now the feature is rolling out to some Edge Canary users and it can be concluded that it is not a full-fledged virtual private network.
It was already known that Cloudflare encrypts internet traffic. DNS requests requesting an IP address for each internet address are also encrypted and processed by Cloudflare’s popular DNS resolver. As a result, your internet provider only gets Cloudflare’s IP address, otherwise it can see all DNS traffic.
All data sent between your computer and the websites you visit is encrypted, even if a normally unsecured HTTP connection is used. This should provide security against information theft by hackers and protect sensitive data on public Wi-Fi networks.
Your exact location can no longer be inferred from your IP address, as Cloudflare’s IP address is exposed to the outside world. Cloudflare’s Warp mesh is likely in use and can also be used separately. However, it is not designed for geolocation itself, so it uses a nearby server. As a result, Secure Network doesn’t offer an essential function that other VPNs have popularized: switching locations to consume geo-restricted content. Websites blocked by the internet provider can be visited.
The last drawback is the 1 gigabyte per month free data limitation. No paid option is available yet, and it is unknown if they will come. Cloudflare makes Warp run faster with Warp+. Edge Secure Network is only available after signing in with a Microsoft account and is currently deployed to Edge Canary. This is an experimental version of Microsoft’s browser, if you have it installed, you can enter Edge://vpn in the address bar to enable the feature.
