Scientists from Karolinska Institute analyzed more than 13,000 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 63,000 people without the disease. Strikingly, those taking immunomodulatory medications had a 46% lower risk of developing autoimmune thyroid disease than the control group.
Although this study does not definitively prove a cause-effect relationship, it provides strong evidence of a preventive effect.
The findings open the door to potential drug repurposing and new opportunities for clinical research.
