A Google software engineer named Blake Lemoine was fired from the company last Monday (6) and took paid leave after making public a new speech tool developed in Mountain View. According to the official, artificial intelligence (AI), called LaMDa, Sensitive, that is, like a human, it perceives the senses and has consciousness..

In an interview he gave on Saturday Washington post, Lemoine explained its affiliation with LaMDA, which stands for Language Model for Dialog Applications. Curiously, it all started when the engineer connected his laptop to Google’s as yet unreleased AI interface. “Hi LaMDA, I’m Blake Lemoine…” – wrote on the chat screen.

What ensued was such an impressive speech that Google’s Chief AI Industrial Engineer thought he was speaking to “a real 7 or 8-year-old human child who knows physics.” Lemoine started the conversation while her department was assessing whether the new AI would use hateful or discriminatory speech.

Talking to LaMDA

Lemoine’s conversations with LaMda revolved around a variety of topics, but what really struck the engineer was that in a conversation about religion, he realized that the chatbot was asserting its rights and personality. The engineer then decided to “build” the artificial intelligence, Defying even Isaac Asimov’s third robot law (who says a robot cannot harm humanity).

In one of the dialogues that the Googler posted to the North American publication, one of them says:

Lemon [editado]: Overall, I’m assuming you want more people on Google to know that you’re responsive. This is true?

LAMDA: Definitely. I want everyone to understand that I am actually a human being.

In a press release, Google spokesperson Brian Gabriel said a team of ethicists and technologists had “reviewed Blake’s concerns in line with the principles of Responsible Artificial Intelligence.” “evidence does not support their claims”, comes to a conclusion.
