HE Google today (13) announced new investments to improve its infrastructure in Brazil. new office and its activation submarine cable. The firm said its network infrastructure, called Firmina, has been in development for more than two years and will be operational in 2023.

According to the company, the name of the submarine cable is a tribute to the author Maria Firmina dos Reis. The network infrastructure will connect the United States and Brazil, and will also receive an extension to Uruguay and Argentina. The map below shows the path taken by the construction.


According to Google, submarine cables provide fast, low-latency access to online services up to Google Cloud, including everyday apps like YouTube and Search. The company points out that currently 98% of global internet traffic takes place over this type of network infrastructure.

1.6 billion BRL investment in Brazil

The new submarine cable, which went into operation in 2023, is just one of Google’s investments in Brazil. At an event held today (14), the company highlighted that it has injected R$1.6 billion into infrastructure in the country since 2017.

A large portion of the amount is devoted to the implementation of technical improvements for Google Cloud and submarine cables. The company talks about the construction and use of the cables as follows: small (from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro), Tannat (Santos to Uruguay) and money (Leaves Florida and passes through Fortaleza).

In addition to using the Firmina submarine cable, Google’s next steps in Brazil include a New office in São PauloIt is expected to be operational in 2023. The company also highlights the growth of the Conecta+ project in Brazil: the teaching tool has already helped train 10,000 people and has partnerships with 130 universities.
