A couple of days ago, the official release of the long-awaited The Day Before from the Yakut studio Fntastic took place.

Literally the whole world was waiting for the game. Over the past few months, it has been at the top of Steam’s expected list.

The studio has been working on the project for about five years, and constantly shared trailers and gameplay clips. However, literally everything that we were promised turned out to be completely different. Already in the first days, players gave the game extremely negative reviews, to date it rating is 19%. you wear? D-e-v-i-t-n-a-d-c-a-t-y percent, Karl!

The developers clearly knew this was the case, because literally a week before the game’s early access release they apologized to the community for an incorrect PR campaign. And the other day, these videos were completely removed; they showed an open world in the style of The Division and The Last of Us.

Now let’s figure out what turned out to be different from our expectations, and why this is a completely different game.

What went wrong? Let’s go through it point by point.

This is not Division

Looking at the first frames, I immediately got the feeling that The Day Before is an analogue of the popular Russian open-world MMO shooter The Division. What did they promise us? Large open world in New York, survival, clearing outposts and much more.

Stylistically and in terms of their gameplay features, the projects were very similar to each other. Always, in trailers.

However everything turned out completely wrong. There are no normal craft weapons, no detailed city, no general atmosphere of the apocalypse. And no one is fighting for survival.

From the very beginning, you are provided in a gated community – you got here after some events (which are not specified). The only important thing to know is that you were after death, lost a lot of blood, and local survivors saved your life. Everybody is here: Nikita, Stas, Gena, Turbo and Dyusha Metelkin doctor, custodian, merchant, bartender and mayor. No one cares about your background, the player immediately accepts weapons, basic equipment and some money to start. Then you will have to survive in the city and build your own dacha, but more on that below.

Why does everyone love DayZ? The huge open world is full of zombie characters that add to the challenges.

In this game, zombies were a real danger, especially on hardcore servers where there are almost no resources. There you can build, expand, assemble your own cars and much more.

All this is the same as what we promised in the new product. What did you get?

There are zombies. That’s all that can be said about them. They So slow and stupid that you are not afraid of them at all. There aren’t very many of them, they get stuck in textures (well, at least they don’t go through doors, thanks for that). They will not be able to catch up only if you decide to walk instead of run. It also doesn’t take that much damage: on average, it wears out about 15% of its health.

The game has its own analogue – a dacha. There are only three options to choose from: a cabin, a larger house or a mansion. Everything requires money, this is a separate location in the center of nowhere. Just a clearing that you enter when fast traveling from a city or safe zone.

The design of the building cannot be chosen; you are not designing it from scratch. Inspect only the inside and around it. Here you can buy furniture, various interior items and all sorts of other little things. It has already been decided where and what to put, there are interacting objects, like radio.

It is also impossible to store this structure. This is a purely declarative optional event in order to at least spend the money somewhere other than weapons and other equipment. Overall, the idea is not bad, but the implementation has so far let us down.

The open world didn’t notice us either. More precisely, how. It exists, but only during outings, because this is not a game in the genre survivalA production. In other words, you must go on raids throughout greater New York and collect various loot for your fellow believers.

This is not Escape from Tarkov

So we get to this game, with which many compare The Day Before. To be honest, the general thing here is just an extraction of the genre, nothing more. I don’t know what else they found that was the same.

Other players, like zombies, does not pose any danger. Hit registrations almost none, the weapon is poorly balanced and tuned. The shooting didn’t work out, the weapon simply had no weight, and I didn’t notice any difference between rifles or pistols in anything other than sound.

The goal of surviving in the city is ONLY to collect loot. With rare exceptions, almost nothing else will be required of you. We went to New York, collected all the things for the quest, evacuated to a safe zone, and passed the quest. We stocked up for the next raid and went on repeating the same actions.

As in Tarkov, here your character has one life. If you were unable to carry things with you from the raid and you died, everything will be lost and you will appear in the same place where you died. Only completely naked (well, except for a shirt and jeans). Weapons, objects, backpack and everything else disappeared.

But it’s not the same here that you only have one life. The character will continue to live, he will just leave the raid with nothing, and then the epidemics will buy everything again. If the money runs out, pandemics will run empty and start collecting money everywhere in the metropolis. By the way, they also pay for it kopecks.

There are no unloaders or body kits with wooden connectors. You can only put things in a backpack; they are different and have different contents. Equipment does not affect your characteristics, these are just decorative things.

You can’t really walk around the city, most of the buildings are closed, but those that are accessible are well designed. True, most often there is either nothing in them, or other people have already walked through them.

There are also such terms broadcast. They are needed to attract the attention of zombies, and that’s all. There are cases for this, but not so many of them. For example, to attract attention and collect loot from corpses.

This system was shown in trailers, where the developers showed how NPC police arrived at the siren. There is no such thing here either.

The cars that were shown in the trailers are also there. However, they cost money in the house, and these amounts are difficult to accumulate because they pay pennies.

Optimization is terrible

It’s difficult to comment on anything here, because this is still a game in early access. However, they promised a high level by the release day on December 7th.

There are a lot of bugs, people pass through each other, things can fall just like that. For example, yesterday I logged into the game after a break, and all my things disappeared from the safe zone. Even from a storage facility where everything was supposed to be stored 100% at all times. It’s unclear where it went. There is no money either.

On an old GTX 1070 Ti the game runs at 20-50 FPS on a high-ultra processor. Instead, 20 frames are obtained when you pass in the same place where a minute ago there were 50. What? Why? Unclear.

The sound of the mood is disgusting. You don’t understand where they’re shooting from, where the enemies are, and so on. Animations are crooked, weak, imitating characters in 9/10 cases do not correspond to speech.

By the way, the text and voice acting are available here in English. And the game is sounded well. This is perhaps the only plus.

Don’t buy it. Certainly not now

Even the end adapter is not placed here, as is usually done. It just doesn’t reflect the actual state of the game.

It costs 1,300 rubles on Steam the day before, and is available from a Russian account.

But I do not recommend purchasing this game under any circumstances. Almost everything in it is poorly implemented, and we were horribly deceived. It’s a completely different game that’s being overlooked at the moment. This is a simulator of the return of a homeless person with rare shootouts, a ton of bugs and no clear story. We have been deceived in everything, and this is very sad.

Yes, I’m not checking that in the future game it will still be possible to seriously transform and become normal. However, now it looks more like a fake for smartphones (graphically too), which simply does not work. And my big advice is that the situation will get better even in a year. Don’t take her.
