The Russian energy system reached a historical record in electricity consumption, exceeding the previous maximum by 2,821 MW. The new peak, equal to 168,765 MW, was recorded at an average daily temperature of -21 degrees Celsius. A record was also broken in Siberia, where consumption was 33,169 MW at -23.4 degrees Celsius; this was 1,331 MW more than in December 2012.

Historically high levels were also recorded in regional energy systems in the period from 6 to 8 December, including the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Irkutsk and Kaluga regions, Tatarstan, Ingushetia and Yakutia. The system operator predicts that electricity consumption will increase further due to prolonged frost.

Previously, Inter RAO reported that in order to maintain the energy balance in the south of the country, periodic restrictions were imposed, up to a complete cessation of electricity supplies abroad. This is due to the increase in the number of consumers and the expansion of supplies to new regions. In case of acute energy shortage, it is recommended to purchase electricity from neighboring countries.
