Mir cards occupied more than half of the Russian payment market: the share of transactions with these cards amounted to 52.5% of the total volume. RBC writes that the national payment system for the first time has reached such indicators.
At the end of the third quarter of 2023, 424.9 million cards for individuals were issued in Russia. The volume of transactions amounted to 44.3 billion rubles: of which 14.4 billion rubles were for payments for goods and services, 21 billion rubles for transfers and 8.8 billion rubles for withdrawals of cash.
The share of Mir cards began to grow sharply against the background of Russia’s withdrawal from international payment systems Visa and Mastercard in March 2022. In October 2023, Visa prohibited banks from countries bordering the Russian Federation from opening accounts for Russian citizens. Otherwise, Visa will impose a fine of $1 million for each card opened. Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Kazakhstan and other states border Russia.
