The project is Amazon’s answer to SpaceX’s Starlink and aims to provide satellite-based broadband internet access to millions of people around the world.

In early November, the first successful optical links were established between two prototype satellites, allowing data transfer at speeds of up to 100 Gbps for an hour or more.

This capability will allow Kuiper satellites to communicate in areas where there are no ground stations nearby.

The successful tests mark a major milestone for the Kuiper project, which plans to deploy a constellation of 3,236 satellites. The company plans to start mass production of the unmanned spacecraft in the coming months.
