Austria, which blocked the approval of the 12th EU sanctions package against Russia, has withdrawn its objections. It is hoped that now the permanent representatives of the EU countries will be able to complete the agreement on the next restrictive measures.
According to Reuters, this became possible after the suspension of the “sponsor of international war” status in the Ukrainian registry of Raiffeisen Bank International. The agency clarifies that Austrian officials, in meetings with European diplomats in recent weeks, demanded that the bank be removed from the list.
“The status is suspended during the period of bilateral consultations with the participation of representatives of the European Commission,” Ukraine’s National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption said in a statement.
It is reported that approval of sanctions against Russia can be expected next week.
The countries of the European Union, despite the objections of Austria and Hungary, agreed this week on the twelfth package of sanctions against Russia. It was noted that the restrictions will include a direct ban on the import of Russian non-industrial diamonds from January 1 and a gradual ban on the import of diamonds from third countries from March 2024.
