A new study by Rambler&Co found that more than 90% of Russians have encountered fake news on various media platforms. Social networks and instant messengers lead in the spread of misinformation with a share of 64%, while television and online publications are cited in 16% and 15% of cases, respectively.
The research, conducted among 262,374 Internet users between November 30 and December 7, 2023, revealed that more than half of the respondents considered politics the most fertile topic for fraud, followed by news about events in their city or country, followed by economic news. .
Interestingly, the majority of those who encountered fake information (81%) did not believe it, but one in ten admitted to believing it, only to later receive a denial. 8% think they were cheated. We also learned that a third of respondents who claim they have never fallen for hoaxes believe this is because of their knowledge, and the same number fully trust the media they read.
The analysis also found that for Russians, lack of links to verified sources (50%) and expressing only a single point of view (33%) are signs of unreliable news. Emotionality and colloquialisms were also mentioned in 13% and 4% of cases, respectively.
