Scientists from Russia have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can detect defects and diseases in vegetables and fruits before they are seen by the human eye. Skoltech and St. This computer vision system, proposed by a team of researchers from the St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation, aims to identify various defects at an early stage, when they cannot yet be seen by the usual method.

Previously, expensive multi- and hyperspectral cameras were used to solve this problem. However, scientists have managed to adapt traditional cameras using two types of neural networks (generative adversarial and convolutional). This artificial intelligence system successfully detects defects such as rot and mold on the surface of apples with a 98% confidence rate, allowing diseased fruits and vegetables to be detected and removed instantly and preventing the spread of diseases.

This technology can be used at the post-harvest stage, where fruits are stored before being delivered to consumers. The new method can significantly save resources and simplify the process of monitoring and managing crop quality, providing a more effective crop health monitoring system.
