Moscow scientists studied the behavior of players in the popular computer game Dota 2 and determined which personality traits are associated with their behavior in virtual reality. They identified two groups of players: those who depend on the opinions of others and those who are independent. The research involved 103 Russian players aged between 14 and 25.

As a result of the analysis, scientists found that experienced gamers are often less sociable in real life, but more politically active and ready to help others. On the other hand, less experienced players are more independent and self-focused. It also turned out that players who performed more “kills” in the game were more focused on the virtual audience rather than real people.

These data can be used to identify adolescents at potential risk, including those prone to aggressive and suicidal behavior. The scientists also plan to develop a model to analyze video game interactions to create “psychological portraits” of players. This model could be useful, for example, in selecting talented e-sports players and identifying at-risk youth.
