Armed with strong marketing and optimistic forecasts, Samsung plans to make foldable devices a “key driver” of growth for its flagships. They expect foldable devices to take up a third of the $600-plus smartphone market by 2027.
The iPhone is still king in the foldable device scene. While patent clues point to a foldable iPad in the future, Apple is staying away from this round, leaving the field open to Android rivals.
It is worth noting that price, durability and practicality continue to be obstacles to mass adoption of foldable smartphones. The fact that return rates are 5-10 times higher than normal phones raises concerns about long-term user satisfaction. But China seems more understanding. Foldable device sales here doubled in the third quarter of 2023, with Honor and Huawei finding fertile ground for their foldable products.
In short, the time for foldable devices has not yet come. Whether they will be the future or a footnote in the history of technology remains to be seen.
