Surveys show people prefer a “passive experience”: 61% of US adults post selectively in their comments; many express concerns about content, privacy, and negativity before posting.
Users also complain about poor quality, blame for misinformation, toxicity, and curated content on social media that make them feel unsafe. Gartner predicts that within two years, half of users will refuse or limit communication.
Platforms are responding by introducing private messaging features like Instagram’s Close Friends*.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri argues that messaging is taking new forms as users take back control, demand safe and meaningful interactions, and turn to private spaces for authentic communication.
Platforms that adapt to these new preferences by creating trusted communities and personalized experiences are likely to thrive in the new era.
So is social media dying? Not necessary. They are transforming to reflect the growing desire for smarter online communications.
