In short:

  • WhatsApp backups will count towards Google Drive storage limit. Once you exceed the limit, the backup will stop until you free up space.

  • When? Beta users started experiencing this as early as December 2023. Others will start in the first half of 2024.

Thirty days before the changes affect your account, a user-friendly banner will appear in Settings > Chats > Chat Backup to gently remind you to adjust your storage strategy.

Alternatives? To eat. Ditch Google Drive and back up your chats directly to your device. Move chat history between Android devices by scanning a QR code. Back up text data only, leaving out media files that take up space.
