This is a step towards realizing SpaceX’s vision of providing global Internet access regardless of location. This year, the text message sending function will be launched in partnership with mobile operators, and the voice communication and data transfer function will be launched in 2025.

The first direct smartphone initiative will use T-Mobile’s cellular spectrum in the US, as well as partnerships in other countries such as Australia, Canada and Japan. To minimize astronomers’ concerns about light pollution, SpaceX plans to reduce the size of future “direct-to-cell” satellites based on feedback from the astronomy community.
