Tesla car owners have been asking for a long time Broadcast Support, Apple’s protocol for wireless content streaming. Well it seems that this new one is closer than ever.
@Tesla_App_iOS, a Twitter account that closely follows updates to the Tesla iPhone app, found that version 4.23 includes hints of AirPlay support. In particular, the electric vehicle manufacturer is already using an API (Application Programming Interface) to achieve the long-awaited integration.
Be careful, the above does not guarantee that the next Tesla update will support AirPlay. However, it shows that the company’s engineers are working to deliver on Elon Musk’s promise.
Over the past year, and due to the large number of owners requesting AirPlay support, Elon Musk said he would discuss the matter with Tesla’s audio engineering team. However, at the time, he was reluctant to set a release date.
“We will discuss this and other improvements with Tesla audio engineers. The new sound system in the Model S and Model X is amazing.” commented via Twitter when asked about AirPlay.
The truth is that developing this type of feature is not something that is achieved overnight. Apple provides the necessary APIs to get it up and running, but manufacturers must integrate it with their own software.
An interesting point is that as reliable as Tesla’s infotainment system is, consumers have expressed interest in using it. Apple Car Play on their electric vehicles. Obviously, those led by Elon Musk saw this not in the best way. There is no point in wasting effort on improving your offering only to end up being replaced by third party software.
AirPlay support, on the other hand, is a more realistic proposition as it’s a simple device-to-device communication protocol that doesn’t require you to change your platform.
Of course, even when AirPlay is available in Tesla vehicles, users will be limited to streaming audio and video. It will not be possible to access, for example, the Maps and Contacts application, as is the case with Apple CarPlay. Nothing from this…
While we still don’t have a specific release date for AirPlay support, it’s now clear that it’s just around the corner. The fact that the API appeared in version 4.23 means, of course, that engineers are already testing it. Let’s see if the company plans to add owners during the beta phase.
