With the help of artificial intelligence, persuasive voice messages are created consisting of fragments of old messages where the speech pattern and voice are copied. Fake voice messages are sent to all chats and contacts of the attacked user. Criminals also write text messages asking for help with money and attach a photo with card information. In this way, scammers try to extort money from the victim’s circle.

Moreover, since attackers take over the account, they can also destroy the data. For example, an aggrieved user said that his information on social networks was different from his passport information and that fraudsters used the information in his passport. Scammers tried to get 200 thousand rubles.

VKontakte said that such schemes are not common on the social network. According to a VK representative, an artificial intelligence-based security system combats this type of fraud on the social network.

As Evgeny Egorov, a leading expert of FACCT’s Digital Risk Protection department, notes, this type of fraud is new and advanced for Russia. However, such plans are difficult to implement.

First, the account on a messaging or social network is hacked, for example, through online voting, and then the fraudsters download all the user’s voice messages and create fake messages based on them, Egorov said.
