“We have good reason to be proud, and we are optimistic about the present and future of the country. Today, I am pleased to announce that after many years of work and alliances, we have signed an agreement with Google to build the Humboldt Cable, which will be the first submarine fiber optic cable to directly connect South America, Oceania and Asia.” said President Gabriel Borich. “As a government, we are working every day to ensure that Chile’s potential is not squandered and that we create the conditions to continue to attract new investments of the same nature to our homeland,” he added.

Once operational, Humboldt is expected to enhance the reliability and resilience of digital communications throughout the Pacific region by connecting the cables that make up the South Pacific Connectivity initiative and will increase investment in cables from various geographies that link French Polynesia and Chile .

By improving international connectivity, submarine cables contribute to economic growth in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) and job creation. Analysys Mason estimates that the Curie submarine cable alone will collectively contribute more than $19 billion to GDP between 2020 and 2027.
which will contribute to the creation of more than 67,000 jobs by 2027.

Additionally, increased network capacity and lower latency enable businesses and public sector organizations to provide better digital services to their customers and citizens, while individuals can gain skills and knowledge that open up new career paths.

The Humboldt Project was named in 2021 in honor of the Prussian scientist, geographer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, who extensively explored South America and Chile.

His seminal work Cosmos is a visionary approach, emphasizing the complex connections between Earth’s regions and emphasizing the concept of global interconnectedness.
