Google confirms it will do this remove some functions considered “underused” Today it’s on Google Assistant, which is the main platform the company uses to interact with users. Changes will be implemented As of the end of February this year.
According to the official statement, 17 commands will be removed in order to “reduce” the number of possibilities for interaction and direct effort with the platform. The company claims: The goal is to “prioritize the experiences you love” and “invest in core technologies” that will make Google Assistant even better.
Check out which features will be removed from Google Assistant:
- Play and control audiobooks on Google Play Books with voice commands;
- Set media, music or radio alarms on compatible devices;
- Access or manage your cookbook, play an instructional video or show step-by-step recipes;
- Manage a timer on smart speakers or displays;
- Use your voice to activate a device or deliver messages via Google Family Group;
- Use your voice to send emails and voice or video messages;
- Reschedule an event in Google Calendar;
- Ask for a quiet meditation exercise;
- Perform voice commands on Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 devices;
- Check itineraries using your voice;
- Request personal information from your contacts;
- Perform specific actions using voice commands, like making a payment, making a reservation, or sharing on social media.
- Read messages, make calls and check media when using driving mode in Google Maps;
- Schedule or read appointments made through Family Bell;
- Listen to a summary of your sleep routine (except for Smart Displays, which will continue to have this feature);
- Have access to calls made on Smart Displays by applications other than Google Duo;
- Get estimated travel time to work on Smart Displays;
Starting January 26, anyone who activates these commands will receive a system notification that the action will soon be stopped.
Are more Google Assistant changes on the way?
Google’s action also suggests continued modification of Google Assistant. There is a trend towards the platform being increasingly sidelined in exchange for popularizing its assistant version with Bard, the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.
The decrease in resources was also reflected in the company’s team responsible for the sector. The Google Assistant division was one of those affected by the latest wave of layoffs at Google, confirmed by the company this week.
