Just because adults don’t have strict limits on screen time doesn’t mean sitting in front of a smartphone or laptop won’t be harmful to them. For example, if you want to watch a series on Netflix, you will probably sit for hours. This condition can increase the likelihood of hypertension, insulin resistance and obesity, neck pain, headaches, eyestrain, and sleep problems.

Additionally, a 2017 study found that moderate to severe levels of depression in adults were associated with spending more time watching TV or using a computer.

Extended screen time can also harm your health if it replaces sleep, work, or communicating with other people.

Experts recommend that adults and children develop healthy technology habits. For example, not using your phone right before going to bed, limiting the time spent on social networks, and putting your smartphone aside at the dinner table.
