While TikTok said the layoffs were part of a routine restructuring, NPR reported that the decision was prompted by a cost-cutting initiative.

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance previously made significant layoffs at Marvel Snap developer Nuverse last year. Previous reports suggested TikTok was making layoffs in mid-2022 due to a global restructuring, and followed that up with another round in early 2023 impacting recruiters in Dublin.

While the layoffs affect only a small portion of ByteDance’s vast global workforce of approximately 150,000 people, they are indicative of broader challenges facing the tech sector as companies grapple with organizational and financial issues.
