The process involves heating the ARR in an electric arc furnace under an atmosphere of argon and hydrogen. As a result, the iron oxides present in the ARR react with hydrogen to form iron and water. The resulting iron is incredibly pure – approximately 98% by weight. The remaining waste has a neutral pH, so it is less harmful to the environment than ARR.

The researchers also discovered that the process produces small amounts of titanium. This suggests that the process could be developed to recover other precious metals from ARR.

The main problem with the new method is that it is very energy intensive. The cost of the energy required to produce hydrogen and operate the arc furnace makes the process economically difficult. But researchers believe the environmental benefits of this process outweigh economic concerns.
