Novotny’s departure is Apple’s second high-profile move to Rivian this month. Earlier this month, Apple’s head of product, mobility and auto services, Jonas Reinke, also left to join Rivian as vice president of product management.
Rumors that Apple is working on its own electric car have been circulating for years, and Novotny’s experience in hardware development could benefit the company.
In a note announcing his departure, Novotny said that although Apple was his “life,” he was excited to “help bring a new product line to life” at Rivian. He added that Rivian “is at the forefront of innovation in the auto industry” and looks forward to “helping shape the future of electric vehicles.”
