They now need to keep the government informed about the development of key AI models. The new requirement is part of President Biden’s executive order announced in October 2023.
As a reminder, it requires companies to notify the federal government and share safety test results for any underlying model that poses a serious risk to national or economic security or public health.
Basic models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini form the basis of productive AI chatbots.
But GPT-4 likely doesn’t reach the computing power threshold that would warrant government oversight.
