The target will need to comply with the European Union’s (EU) Digital Markets Act (DMA), and let users decide on data sharing between company sites. The new rules will come into force on March 7.
According to the EU, Meta is a “gatekeeper” company, that is, a gatekeeper that controls access. It has a number of products among its “core platform services”: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Marketplace. Therefore, data should not be merged between platforms without the user’s permission.
In the coming weeks, Meta will begin sending notifications offering usage options to users in European Union member states and Switzerland. The new feature to separate or leave everything together can also be found in the Account Center.
Although Meta leaves the choice up to users, it has created some obstacles. For example, users who decide to buy something through Marketplace will not be able to use Messenger to contact the seller, only email. It is stated that players using Facebook Gaming will also be affected by this situation and their access to multiplayer games will be blocked.
This is because the law restricts big tech’s ability to process data for advertising use. The economic bloc had already objected to these impositions. Among the new DMA rules, It needs to be easy to consent to or withdraw data sharing.
“In particular, access controllers should not be allowed to request consent from end users more than once a year for the same processing purpose for which they did not initially consent or withdrew consent,” the regulation underlines.
If any company violates the Digital Markets Law, European Commission may impose fines of up to 10% of global annual business value.
