The lawsuits were filed by states including Los Angeles and San Francisco, accusing Tesla of improperly disposing of waste, including materials generated during the production and servicing of its vehicles. In 2018, employees of the San Francisco prosecutor’s office detected evidence of illegal waste disposal at the company’s service centers.

The company previously had an agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency on hazardous materials management in 2019 and was required to properly manage waste at its Fremont facility and pay a $31,000 fine.
