A new study has revealed that Meteorite from Mars Tissint contains a wide variety of organic compoundspossible by providing more information about Origin of life on the Red Planet.

The discovery was the result of joint work between the Technical University of Munich, Helmholtz Munich (Germany) and the scientific establishment Carnegie Science, and has been published in the journal. Science Advances.

The meteorite in question takes its name from the Moroccan city where pieces fell on July 18, 2011. The alien rock specimen was launched into space after a violent event hundreds of millions of years old. The analysis showed the presence of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and magnesium, a set of molecules often associated with the formation of life.

The team underlined that the rare material is free of contaminants, as it was recovered on site shortly after the fall. As such, it represents a faithful portrait of mineral compounds that are abundant in the Martian mantle and crust but may have evolved over geological time.

In the study, the authors explain that “understanding the processes and sequence of events that shaped this rich organic abundance will reveal new details about the habitability of Mars.” For this, scientists hope to learn more from the study of new samples brought from our neighboring planet by current and future missions, such as those performed by the Perseverance rover.
