The government has been negotiating with the American company for a long time, but the parties could not reach any agreement. Concerns and complaints about Meta stem from its data processing and storage practices, but security questions remain unanswered.
In this regard, the government is ready to take the extreme step and completely ban Facebook in the country and, apparently, any activities of the parent company in the Netherlands. The government has now requested advice from the government’s Data Protection Authority. Once the data is received, officials will make the final decision.
Alexandra van Hoeffelen, State Secretary at the Dutch Ministry of Internal Affairs and Royal Affairs, said of the situation: “In 2017, the Dutch Data Protection Authority found that Facebook had violated privacy law in two areas: informing users and processing sensitive data.”
* The organization is considered extremist, its activities are prohibited in Russia.
