In addition, study participants were asked to report the stress they encountered during the day and the level of stress they perceived.
When the researchers analyzed the audio recordings using special software, they noticed some notable changes on the days when people reported more stress. They found that people spoke faster and more intensely when they experienced more stress during the day.
One of the study’s authors said that stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, which in turn leads to the release of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. And they, in turn, cause bronchodilation and increased respiration, which can increase the intensity or volume of the voice and the rate of speech.
