Demand for FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) goods in Russia recovered in 2023 after a decline in 2022, a NielsenIQ study showed. This was influenced by growing consumer demand, the expansion of the assortment and the strengthening of national players.
In 2023, the consumer goods market increased by 7.2% in monetary terms compared to 2022. At the same time, 1.2 percentage points (pp.) of the growth came from real demand and 6 pp. – inflation.
“This distribution can be considered a good result, since in 2022 the fall in real demand negatively influenced the dynamics and the contribution of inflation was three times greater than the current values,” the study notes.
In physical terms, the consumer goods market also showed a recovery after falling a year earlier: growth in package sales reached 3.2%. The main contribution to the recovery was made by the food group, while, at the same time, physical sales of non-food products and tobacco continued to slow (decrease of 4.8% and 1.9%, respectively).
If we look at the individual categories, the main market drivers last year were energy and sports drinks, meat, sausages, as well as brandy and whiskey.
