The new study analyzed data from more than 25,000 men and women between 2012 and 2017. Especially work and sleep patterns. The full results were published in the journal BMC Public Health.
Scientists found that people who worked 55 or more hours a week slept the worst compared to those who worked a standard 35-40 hours a week. Among other things, their sleep was short and they suffered from sleep disorders. Short sleep is defined as sleeping less than seven hours per night, and sleep disorders are defined as struggling to fall asleep within 30 minutes, waking up in the middle of the night or early in the morning, and reporting one’s sleep as inadequate.
Those who worked most or all weekends and those who worked irregular schedules (such as shifts) also experienced sleep disturbances. In particular, their sleep was either too short or too long (more than eight hours a night).
