The company announced on Thursday (8) that user conversations with Gemini will be stored on Google servers for years. A service support document reveals that chat data is collected across the web and mobile versions of the chatbot.

According to the company, conversations with Gemini even undergo human evaluation, although this is not defined as a way to improve service. t by defaultAll chats are stored for at least three yearsincluding sender data such as location, language and device used.

Users also have some control over the data shared with Google. By disabling Gemini activity in the “My Activity” section in your account settingsYour future conversations with the chatbot will not be recorded for evaluation. Additionally, all interactions with the bot can be deleted.

However, even if the setting is disabled, conversations with Gemini are stored on Google servers for 72 hours. The purpose of this is to “secure” Gemini applications and improve service.

It is important that you do not share sensitive or identifiable data with Gemini, as conversations can be viewed by others. If you want to protect Google’s own identity, avoid saying who you are or making very specific requests.

While hiding chats is a privacy caveat, Google isn’t the only one adopting this practice. For example, OpenAI keeps chats recorded for 30 days, even when chat history is turned off.
