Researchers from Florida Atlantic University examined the relationship between personality traits, social adjustment, and life outcomes. They analyzed data from a large personality survey, classifying people by their “extreme” traits (openness, conscientiousness, etc.) and comparing them to the distribution of traits in their population.
Here’s what they found:
-
Communities have different personality profiles: Manhattan, for example, has twice as many open people as Detroit, while Detroiters tend toward conscientiousness.
-
People whose personalities matched the dominant characteristics of their society reported greater wealth, healthier habits, and even higher levels of education than their parents.
This study suggests that individuals and communities shape each other. Finding a community where your type thrives can lead to a happier, healthier life. But researchers warn against simplistic interpretations. Individual counties may vary, and the study does not imply that communities are homogeneous.
