The accident occurred while Hans von Ohain and his friend Eric Rossiter were driving a Tesla Model 3 to play golf outside Denver.
According to The Washington Post, at the time of the crash, von Ohain was driving a test version of Tesla’s driver assistance system FSD Beta, which can take over all steering functions but requires the driver to keep their hands on the steering wheel. and be ready to take control at any time.
A few hours into the journey, the Tesla Model 3 crashed into a tree and caught fire, killing von Ohain.
Rossiter, the sole survivor, told emergency services that von Ohain was driving a “Tesla Autopilot” and the car “went off the road.”
He also noted that FSD Beta changed course several times during the trip. At the same time, according to him, von Ohain looked “calm and sober” after drinking alcohol. The investigation revealed that von Ohain’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
