The issue came to light when The Verge’s Tom Warren noticed that after updating his computer, his Edge browser was opening with recently used Chrome tabs. Although the Edge browser has the ability to import browsing data from other browsers, including Chrome, it should not be enabled without the user’s explicit permission.
There are also reports that other users are encountering a similar situation despite the import functionality being disabled. Microsoft’s failure to make an immediate statement further increased suspicions.
However, it is said that a recent update will fix this problem. According to Microsoft’s release notes, the issue stems from a syncing issue: “The status of this feature may not sync or display correctly across multiple devices.” This explanation doesn’t exactly square with reports of disabled features causing import, but Microsoft is holding off on going into further detail for now.
