It’s no secret that Apple wants to prevent iPhone and iPad users from installing apps that don’t come from its own App Store. CEO Tim Cook defended his stance on sideloading at the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) annual Global Privacy Summit.

For example, Cook warns that the imposition of sideloading by competition authorities could allow companies to circumvent Apple’s privacy rules to re-track user activity. In addition, it will provide a means for rogue parties to circumvent the “extensive security measures we have in place.” The Apple CEO is referring to “other company devices” that can infect ransomware by installing malicious apps.

Tim Cook’s speech, which will begin at 14:17, will last approximately 15 minutes.

During his keynote, Cook made further key comments, including that the company continues to advocate “strong comprehensive privacy law in the United States.” Security also reiterates its commitment to “backdoor encryption without a backdoor – because we know it can be abused by anyone”.
